Sena call for bandh on minimum support price of cotton
Shiv Sena working president, Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday warned that if government fails to hike the minimum support price for raw cotton by December 14 next, the Sena would call for Vidarbha, Marathwada and Khandesh Bandh.
Shiv Sena working president, Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday warned that if government fails to hike the minimum support price for raw cotton by December 14 next, the Sena would call for Vidarbha, Marathwada and Khandesh Bandh.
Addressing a public meeting at Wardha, some 80 kms from Nagpur, Thackeray asserted that the Sena would boycott the customary tea party, organised by the chief minister before the winter session of Nagpur on the issue. He also said that if all these form of registering protests would not give any dividends, his party would adopt “Shiv Sena” style of agitation.
Thackeray was in Wardha to attend the concluding function of the “Cotton Dindi” (cotton march), which was started from Gurukunj Mozari in Amaravati district last week and reached at Pauner in Wardha district on Wednesday morning.
“We expect that the state government would come out with a bailout package for the cotton growers of Vidarbha and Marathwada during the winter session of the state legislature. We will give time to the government to do so till December 14. If it fails to announce the package during the period, the Sena would go ahead with its bandh call in Vidarbha and Marathwada on December 15,” he said.
The Sena leader said that the cotton growers in the region were facing very hardship and an average two farmers commit suicide every day because of agrarian crisis in Vidarbha. “In view of the situation, the state should intervene and come forward with the package,” he insisted.
He also lashed out at the Congress led UPA government for its move to allow FDI in retail sector and said that his party would strongly oppose it. “If a foreigner (Sonia Gandhi) is ruling the country she will sure take care of foreign interest,” he quipped.
