Service tax dispute resolution scheme launched

The government has introduced a scheme for resolution of disputes in service tax called the Service Tax Disputes Resolution Scheme 2008.

The scheme will be applicable for those cases where the amount under dispute is less than Rs 25,000.

According to the Finance Bill presented last Friday, under the scheme, a person against whom tax arrear is pending will need to make a declaration before the designated authority.
The authority will pass an order and determine the amount payable on the basis of declaration.
The new law provides that once the declarant pays the amount as directed by the designated authority, the matter would not be open for such dispute in any court of law or any other forum.
