Seven terrorists killed in J&K encounters

The joint operation by army and police kill seven terrorists in different clashes close to the LOC in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, reports Rashid Ahmad.

The joint operation by army and police, shot dead seven terrorists in different clashes close to the line of control in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Wednesday. The police believe that the slain terrorists had recently infiltrated to this side of the LOC. They say that the slain militants could be the Lashkar-e-Toiba cadres.

Troops of 17 Dogra and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police laid siege around village Sangrapati near Trehgam in Kupwara after a tip off regarding the presence of militants in the village. As the troops zeroed in on the house, where terrorists had taken shelter, a fierce gun-fight followed as militants opened fire on the soldiers. SSP Kupwara Vijay Kumar said that two militants were killed in the retaliatory firing from the security forces.

Some other militants however succeeded to break the cordon and escape from the scene. The troops and police chased the fleeing militants and tracked them down in Dard Hare village, said SSP. He said that troops of 14 grednadiers also joined them. "In the ensuing gun fight three more militants were killed" he added.

Five structures including two residential houses have suffered damage in the encounter. Vijay kumar said that the group had recently infiltrated and it is believed that most of them were owing allegiance to Lashkar-e-Toiba. He said that five rifles three of which were in damaged condition were also recovered with some ammunition. Besides SSP Kupwara GOC Kilo Force Maj Gen JS Bajwa was also supervising the encounters.

Two terrorists and a soldier have got killed in a gun-battle in Handwara quarter of the district during Tuesday night.

Another soldier was killed and four wounded in a clash with militants near line of control in the same area on Tuesday.

Police said that they arrested two Lashkar-e-Toiba cadres in Bandipora when they were traveling on a motorcycle. Two hand grenades have been recovered from them. Police believe that the grenades were meant to be used against security forces in Bandipora.
