On hearing morning's news that the Australian Federal Police had decided to drop plans to extend Mohammed Haneef's detention, his family is relieved, reports BR Srikanth.

Firdaus Arshiya will savor some kheer the day her husband Mohammed Haneef walks free. But Friday morning’s news that the Australian Federal Police had decided to drop plans to extend his detention was just as sweet. “The ordeal is over. I am sure he will be back soon,” the 26-year-old said in Bangalore

Kheer will be prepared and special prayers offered the day Haneef walks out of custody, she said.

Arshiya said she came across the news first on the website of The Australian early. “He has not called again, but that’s ok because he will be released soon. It would have been better if he were questioned by the police without being held for so many days (11 days),” she said.

She said Haneef would have been saved the ordeal but for the SIM card he had passed on to Sabeel Ahmed, his cousin, with whom he shared an accommodation in Liverpool. “That SIM card has brought us so much trouble,” she said, adding that the two families were not in touch anymore.

Arshiya broke the news her mother-in-law Qurat-ul-ain in the morning. “Everyone is relieved. We knew he was innocent... God knows my brother is innocent. We are praying for his release. We want him to come home soon,” said Haneef’s brother Shoaib.

The Haneefs have a two-week-old daughter, Haniya. Arshiya married Haneef here in November 2005 and moved with him to Britain and then Australia. She returned in March to have the baby.
