Addressing an impressive gathering of Muslim intellectuals, Azam Khan compared the university with a religious building and said after the demolition of Babri mosque in 1992, minorities had formed the government of SP and the next election would be an acid test for the minorities community’s affiliation with the SP.  “We are going to construct a sizeable educational institution”, he said.

Hitting hard at Congress for creating hindrance in approval of the university, Khan claimed it was the achievement of his whole political life, result of his honesty and blind faith of SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav in Azam Khan.
He said for vested political interests, Union Minister for Human Resources Arjun Singh had raised the issue of the minority character of Aligarh Muslim University and the Allahabad High Court gave a verdict against the minority character of the AMU.

He expressed satisfaction that the Supreme Court had reversed the judgement and hit Congress for not bringing the Bill in Parliament to bring a change in the law and provide minority character to the AMU.

Lashing out at the Congress, he said for the last 40 years Muslims had voted for the Congress but now the minorities wanted their share in government and politics.

He said it was politics which kept the minorities on the sidelines and brought destruction for them in form of around 40,000 communal
riots.

Active participation in politics with full dignity and political weight would be a potent weapon to counter the destruction, he said. Highlighting the role of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar in the freedom struggle, he said after independence the sacrifice of Jauhar and 35,000 Muslims who were assassinated during the struggle, was forgotten.

“The establishment of the university would highlight the contribution of minorities in the freedom movement”.

Khan said three conditions set for the establishment of Jauhar University had been fulfilled. First condition was to ensure 50-acre land for the university.
At present the trust has 160-acre land. The second condition was to deposit Rs 2 crore as security which had been deposited. The third one was a building over 24,000 square feet and the construction was going on, he said.

People contributed around Rs 10 lakh with open heart in the programme and assured that they would continue their assistance. State Minister Jaiprakash Yadav, SP MLC Ganesh Shanker Pandey, director of UP Minorities Financial Corporation Zafar Amin Dakku, Maulana Junaid Alam, Mehdi Hasan advocate and many others expressed their views on this occasion.
Asim Wahidi presided over the programme.
