A rule to work
Big salaries come at a big price, as this newspaper has reported after a survey on the matter.
What do most of us working stiffs spend all our lives in pursuit of? A hefty pay package would be a fair bet. How it burns us up when we hear those feel-good stories about the astronomical salaries fresh IIM/IIT graduates are getting. But let’s not forget that big salaries come at a big price, as this newspaper has reported after a survey on the matter. Let us exult in the fact that of 400 middle-level executives, 66 per cent are not too thrilled about their work life. The poor dears are so busy raking it in that they have no time for their personal lives. Are things going to get better for them?
Let those of us who can barely make it to the middle of the month on measly salaries rejoice. The loaded ones are being done in by technology. They have to be available 24/7 on their Blackberrys. So while you are putting up your feet and swilling Scotch, sorry make that a cheap Indian liquor brand, the suits are taking work home. And while you may suffer from an overdose of leisure, the 24/7-ers are developing cardio-vascular diseases and diabetes at a far more early age. But, unfortunately, not much note has been taken of this since the perception is that people earning hefty salaries are generally in fine fettle.
Of course, this is not to say that the lesser-off are not prone to stress and strain. So while you are slowly coming unstuck in your dingy flat, the high-powered executive is doing the same in his well-appointed company penthouse. But both happiness quotients are not likely to differ quite so much as the number of smackers in the bank.
