But our survival instincts have apparently battled hard enough for us to develop an immunity to such pleasurable non-activity. We succumbed to the challenge of finding ways out of risking life, limbs and lungs for our employers in the harsh, UV rays-unprotected world outside the office premises. The air-conditioning, coffee machine and the extended lunch breaks over the latest combo offers from our favourite fast-food delivery joints, of course, egged us on in this ‘sedentary lifestyle’ mission.
But now, we’re told, we face a life-threatening situation. According to a study from New Zealand, sitting around in office doing nothing worthwhile throughout the day is the most efficient way to develop deep vein thrombosis — blood clots in English — in our legs. Besides fatally affecting our chances of enjoying our hard-earned lifestyle choices, it can also kill us.
And let’s not even mention the backaches, heart diseases and obesity that we are apparently prone to because of the perks of our work. In order to survive this latest job hazard, say doctors, we need to curl up our toes. Seriously, it’s hard work staying alive.
