Madni is from the opposition, PDP, while the Lone belongs to the ruling National Conference.

The speaker had reportedly asked Madni to resign from his post for joining PDP MLAs who had created ruckus in the House on Tuesday, demanding suspension of business to discuss the prevailing situation in Kashmir. One PDP MLA and two marshals had been injured in the mêlée.

“The speaker has always ignored the voice of opposition and he had no authority to seek my resignation. I will no more be deputy speaker whether the House accepts my resignation or not,” Madni later told mediapersons.

Earlier in the day, Madni had trooped into the well of the House during question hour, protesting against the speaker’s charge that he was behaving like an opposition member. “You have made some remarks against me and I want to raise them in the House,” he shouted.

Madni also attacked the speaker for charging the PDP patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, with “orchestrating” the pandemonium in the Assembly on Tuesday.

With Madni taking his protest to the well of the House, the minister for law and parliamentary affairs, Ali Mohammad Sagar remarked, “This is unprecedented. I have never seen in the history of state legislature the deputy speaker coming to the well of the House. This is not your job.”
