After making advances relentlessly, Arun Kumar (30) finally lost control on Thursday, and stabbed one of his girl students and chopped off her left thumb before walking off coolly.
The Chennai police are looking for Kumar, a professor in a private engineering college. He attacked the 21-year-old girl at a private electrical firm where she was supposed to begin her final year project work on Thursday itself.
The girl is undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
The police said Kumar had a disturbed personal life. He had separated from his wife and lived alone in the northern suburb of the city.
As head of the department of electrical and electronic engineering at Venkateswara College of Engineering and Technology in adjoining Thiruvallur district, Kumar taught the girl for the past three years. In fact, it was Kumar who had recommended the girl’s name to the company in Ramavaram in west Chennai for her project work. But lately, he had been making advances on her.
Inspector A Sivakumar, investigating officer, told HT on Saturday that following the girl’s complaint against Kumar with the police in Thiruvallur a few weeks ago, accusing him of pestering her, the police had summoned Kumar and told him to leave the girl alone.
He added: “She is out of danger. The doctors have stitched back her thumb.”
