A day after a youth was killed in Khandwa town in communal violence, a stone pelting incident on police jawans was reported at Ghaspura Bangladesh Colony on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred even though a curfew is in place in the town.
Several police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting and police rounded up half-a-dozen residents of the area. Police have cordoned off the area and search operation is on. The situation in other parts of the town remains tense but no untoward incident has been reported so far.
Police have restricted religious gatherings in the city, be it Naag Panchami or Friday prayers. Senior police officials including IG (Indore) Vipin Maheshwari and Indore commissioner Sanjay Dubey are camping in the town.
On the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, an insurance company employee, Sushil Kumar Pundge, was stabbed to death while at least six people including a policeman were injured as stones were thrown during the protest.
The trouble began after a Facebook post, allegedly shared from the profile of Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Khandwa municipality president Amar Yadav, showed objectionable objects near a holy shrine.
Yadav, however, denied his involvement, claiming a fake profile had been created on the social media platform under his name.
