The move comes from Army bosses who feel this is just a step to beef up security in the high- alert zone following serial Mumbai blasts.

The Army has already made it mandatory for the civilians in the area to procure passes to enter cantonment. A large number of civilians have been living in the high-alert area.

The sub-area commander S K Khajuria on Tuesday said that the step is being taken to ensure safety and security of the area. He said cantt walking plaza is delight for the morning walkers, and therefore one can see people from all walks of life during morning and evening. “The system of passes would ensure safety of the people,” he said and added that all that the walkers would have to do is to produce the passes as and when asked.

Work for the same would begin as soon as the disbursement of passes for the civilians was over. About 10,000 passes for the vehicles of types and the owners will have to be issued. So far, the central command has received 3,000 to 4,000 applications from the civilians.

As regards the removal of beacons from the Army vehicles, the sub- area commander said that there had been no communication from the State Government in this regard.

“Any such communication would be sent to Army headquarters in Delhi and we would follow  whatever directions are issued from there,” he said.
