Students riot at Nagpur university
The BJYM went on the rampage in Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, demanding re-examination for the Fine Arts Course. HT Correspondent reports.
The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) went on the rampage in Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University on Friday, demanding re-examination for the Fine Arts Course that had a syllabus change recently for this academic year. Students who failed the Fine Arts examination have been demanding a chance to reappear for the paper of the older course, where in they wouldn’t have to study the new one.
“The demand had been placed on earlier occasions before the vice-chancellor. But he turned a blind eye to it,” said BJYM president Pravin Datke. The agitated youth vandalised the varsity premises, breaking window panes, chairs and damaging other furniture. They even tried to set the pro vice chancellor’s front office room on fire.
Vice-Chancellor SN Pathan expressed grief that the students had resorted to violence. “Everything can be resolved through discussion,” he said. He added that he would urgently convene a meeting of the Board of Studies on Saturday and take a decision in this regard.
Though the mob fled the scene before the police arrived, five of the agitators turned themselves in later that same day. Meanwhile, DCP Zone I Sureshkumar Mekhla said that some more faces had also been identified and if they didn’t present themselves to the police soon, they would be rounded up.
