A speeding taxi hit a motorcycle on a busy Dadar junction on Wednesday afternoon.
But the impact was so hard that one of the two pillion riders was thrown across the divider and run over by another speeding vehicle.
Dheeraj Rawal (21), a resident of LIC Colony in Prabhadevi, succumbed to head injuries at Siddhivinayak Hospital.
His two friends, Pranay Honale (19), who just cleared his Class 10 Board exams, and Sadashiv Tate (21), a college dropout, are admitted to KEM hospital. All three lived in the same locality.
Rawal, who lived with his maternal aunt, worked part-time as a courier boy.
At 1 pm, he asked Honale to give him a ride to the State Bank of India branch near Kirti College. “Rawal had to deposit cash at the bank. While returning home, we met Tate and offered him a lift,” Honale told the police.
Honale was riding the Hero Honda, while Rawal shifted to the middle to make place for Tate.
“At 1.30 pm, when the bike reached the Kirti college lane and Veer Savarkar Road junction, a taxi, which was speeding towards Mahim, hit the bike,” said Inspector Vinay Kulkarni of the Shivaji Park police station.
“The impact of collision was such that Rawal was thrown across the divider. He was crushed under the wheels of a white Bolero. The other two lay injured on the road.”
While taxi driver Rajendra Sahani (31), a resident of Sion-Koliwada, was arrested for rash and negligent driving, the police are looking for the driver of the Bolero. “We found the Bolero’s number plate on the spot,” said Kulkarni.
