"I was shocked to discover that some students were carrying vodka in their water bottles everyday. We immediately called parents of the children and told them to be more vigilant. Later, principals of some other schools have also complained that some children bring liquor in water bottles to the schools. They prefer vodka because it cannot be easily detected," said a promoter of a private school, on the condition of anonymity.

Col. (retd.) Partap Singh, president of Gurgaon chapter of Haryana Progressive Schools Conference (HPSC) too admitted that two similar incidents were reported from the city.

"It is happening because of the easy availability of liquor on every nook and corner of the city. We have a liquor vend very close to our school premises. It is very easy for the students to fetch liquor. We are planning to take up the matter with the government authorities," he added.

Last year, the Gurgaon police had raided a pub in Sahara Mall on MG Road and detained 83 students (class 9-12) from three well-known public schools, enjoying liquor party. One of them, an 8th standard student had fainted in the pub after consuming drinks. A case was registered against the pub owner on the charges of making public nuisance under Excise and Taxation Act. However, no case was registered against the students.

Rising incidents of school students consuming alcohol and drugs have turned the authorities and parents into a worried lot.

Owing to social taboo, neither the schools nor the parents report such incidents when their wards get into the deadly trap of alcohol and drugs.

The only incident put on police records so far was the December 25 raid at a pub in Sahara Mall where 83 students (class 9-12) from three well-known schools were enjoying a liquor party. A case was registered against the pub owner but no charges were pressed against the students.
