Only on Sunday the police had recovered a large number of polythene bags containing body parts of nearly 25 new-born babies from a garbage pit close to a private nursing home at Nabaghanpur village, barely three km from Nayagarh where bodies of seven new-born babies were also recovered on July 14.

The foetuses were recovered inside polythene bags. "We suspect that the foetuses were dumped after illegal abortion at a private nursing home," Sadar police station inspector Girijanandan Rath said.

The police has sent the foetuses to the MKCG Medical College Hospital in Berhampur for a forensic test.

"We suspect that some nursing homes from the town might have dumped the foetuses in the wake of recovery of several body parts of babies in Nayagarh which is Ganjam's neighbouring district," Rath said.

The police, however, said it had not detained any one in this connection because there was no private or government hospital nearby.

Meanwhile, Orissa Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy, health and family welfare secretary Chinmmay Basu and senior police officers on Monday rushed to Nayagarh.
