In the first incident, an aspiring medical student – enrolled at a coaching centre in the city – committed suicide at his room in Mahaveer Nagar Extension on Sunday.

Although no suicide note was recovered from the spot, police found a piece of paper listing the deceased’s supposed shortcomings pasted on the wall of the room.

Identifying the deceased as 19-year-old Keshav Meena, police said his uncle – Lakshminarayan Meena – was told by the owner of his PG accommodation that repeated attempts to wake him up that morning had gone in vain. His dinner tiffin box was also lying outside his door, untouched.

The concerned uncle called up the police, who broke into the room to find Keshav hanging from the ceiling fan. His body was taken to the Maharao Bhim Singh Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy was performed. It was later handed over to his relatives.

Though police said Keshav may have taken the extreme step because he failed to perform well in the recent National Eligibility and Entrance Test, they couldn’t confirm the motive in the absence of a suicide note.

However, Mahaveer Nagar police station circle inspector Kalulal said the piece of paper listing Keshav’s shortcomings could help in the investigation. “The note, written by the victim, claimed that he was unable to complete his test syllabus because he wasted too much time and kept a lot of work pending,” Kalulal said, adding that the note also contained references to his financial situation.

In the second incident, a final-year B Tech student died at a city hospital on Saturday – two days after he consumed poison in the city’s Subashnagar-II area.

Police said that 22-year-old Avanish Meena, a resident of Hingoniya village in Kanwas tehsil, had not performed well in one of his papers. Prior to committing suicide, Avanish called up his family to tell them that “he was going to heaven”.

The victim’s body was handed over to his family members after a post-mortem examination.

Despite several measures adopted by the government and NGOs, student suicides continue unabated in the coaching hub. While 20 students ended their lives in 2015, six have taken the extreme step until now this year.
