Twenty-three-year-old Saba Noor became the first female resident of Udhampur to top the KAS examination, the results of which were declared on Friday by the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC). She scored 1,476 out of 1950. Rupali Vaid, a resident of Housing Colony here, scored 1446 and was ranked second. Noor is a student of MSc (zoology) at Jammu University and a resident of Badali Rakh village here. When Hindustan Times spoke to Noor, she said, "I was expecting my name to stand out in the list but I was little surprised when I found my name on top of the list." When asked about her exam preparation, she said, "I had no fixed schedule. I would simultaneously study for my masters as well as for the KAS exams."

She said her father Noor Muhammad, who was a businessman, and her mother Parveza Akther, who was working in the school education department, had helped her realise her dreams.

Noor, who would be appearing for the Indian Administrative Services examination this year, said her aim was to serve the downtrodden in the state, particularly those in her hometown Udhampur, as the district lacked several opportunities for the youth.

The three toppers from the district, Saba Noor, Rupali Vaid and Rahul Nagar, are alumni of Happy Model Higher Secondary School, Udhampur. Principal of the school, Vikram Gulati, congratulated the toppers and said it was a matter of pride for the school and the entire district.

The JKPSC put up the list of 99 successful candidates on the basis of merit on Friday. Nearly thirty out of 99 were female candidates, who had outshined males this time.
