ULFA chief Baruah issues warning to AASU leaders
The outlawed group has warned senior leaders of the student group not to become a hurdle in the state's independence struggle.
ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Barua has warned senior leaders of the influential All Assam Students Union (AASU) not to oppose the group's "struggle for Assam's independence" and create hurdles for it.
The AASU leaders are trying to create hurdles in the struggle for the Assam's "sovereignty" that "will be opposed not only by us but also by the people", Barua said in a statement to a vernacular daily here.
"AASU has now become a launching ground for a group of student leaders in Assam who aspire to take up politics as a career," he claimed.
Commenting on AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya's statement that the ULFA was ignorant of the student group's history, Barua said, "Everybody knows that most leaders of our organisation were at one time or the other directly or indirectly associated with the AASU and also with other movements launched to protect the interests of the state."
Barua accused AASU leaders of misguiding students in the state in the interest of "furthering their own political career".
The ULFA and AASU have engaged in a bitter war of words in recent times, with Barua dubbing Bhattacharya as an "agent of the Centre". The AASU has condemned the killing of migrant workers by the ULFA and said it did not need a certificate from anyone regarding its commitment to the interests of the state.
