UP minister resigns after murder charges

UP minister Jamuna Nishad tenders his resignation to Mayawati after he was named in an FIR in connection with the killing of a cop in Maharajganj district.

Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Minister Jamuna Nishad on Sunday tendered his resignation to Chief Minister Mayawati after he was named in an FIR in connection with the killing of a police constable in Maharajganj district.

Nishad submitted his resignation to Mayawati who had summoned him to her official residence in Lucknow this afternoon, official sources said.

Police filed an FIR against the minister and 50 of unnamed supporters under section 302 (murder) and other relevant charges under the IPC and the Arms Act after a constable was killed in firing during protests over alleged shielding of a suspect in a rape case in Maharajganj last night.

The sources said the police will have to seek the permission of Speaker of the assembly in case they decide to arrest the minister.

Supporters of Nishad had also allegedly attempted to ransack the Kotwali police station in Mahrajganj.
