UP team excel in water sports
UTTAR PRADESH team fetched three gold medals in 'All India Open White Water Rafting and Kayaking Championship 2006' held at Shivpuri, Rishikesh from April 20.
UTTAR PRADESH team fetched three gold medals in 'All India Open White Water Rafting and Kayaking Championship 2006' held at Shivpuri, Rishikesh from April 20.
A group of six girls and six boys representing the team from Uttar Pradesh were invited by 'Uttranchal Kayaking/Canoeing and Rafting Association' to participate in the event for the first time. Altogether 19 teams participated out of which women championship was won by Uttar Pradesh while men's title was grabbed by Roorkee Army Uttranchal.
In 'two kilometer sprint race' and '16 kilometer rafting marathon (female),' the gold medals were won by team consisting of Taruna Nishad, student in Girls' High School, Preeti Pal from Allahabad Inter College, Rekha Kashyap and Kanak Pandey from Adarsh Kanya Inter College. They also received prize money of Rs 15000 each.
In 'mixed-doubles junior rafting' the winners were team consisting of Komal Nishad from Rama Devi Balika Inter College, Menaka Kesarwani from Gauri Pathshala Girls Inter College, Ashish Kumar Nishad and Arun Kumar Nishad from DAV Inter College. They received the prize money of Rs 8000 each along with the gold medals.
All the above mentioned sportspersons are receiving training under coach Tribhuvan Nishad and they are the regular members of Boat Club, Allahabad Development Authority. "City has no dearth of talented sportspersons. After winning at state level, our team will enhance its skills towards competing at national level," said the coach.
According to DP Singh, Boat Club officer and joint secretary UP Kayaking/ Canoeing Association, several other sportspersons trained at Boat Club have already won medals in national championships.
