FOR UT Administration, making big announcements on the Republic Day every year seems to be just a formality. For, many promises made on the day remain unkept while some of them are repeated every year.

Promises like improving the water and power supply are made every year, but the situation never changes. A few years back, the then Adviser had promised a power-cut free city, but the problem persists. The Administration had also announced to introduce battery-operated buses in 2003, but the proposal is yet to materialise. Also, there was an announcement to reduce noise pollution, but the department concerned is yet to initiate action in this regard.

In 2000, UT had announced that the city would have a computerised health centre in Sector 44, which never came up. GMCH-32 was to have CT Scan and MRI facilities. Though CT Scan was started after two years, the hospital is still to have MRI facility.

There was a proposal to remove Kumhar Colony and build 1,600 dwelling units instead. After five years, the colony is still in its place and not many of the 1,600 units have come up. It had also been announced that all government schools would have computer education from Class VI, but about 25 such schools are still waiting for the facility.

In 2001, UT had announced a furniture and marble market in Sector 56. In 2002, it was to strengthen the public transport system and introduce electric trolley buses. In 2003, it said about 110 acres would be acquired for additional housing, including MIG and LIG houses. Last year, it was announced that all cycle tracks would be completed by December 31.

The next Republic Day is just a few days away and all these proposals are still pending.
