SI Girwar Singh of Gulaothi police station received bullet injuries last evening when the villagers attacked the police team in plain cloths chasing a criminal Yamin, who was carrying a reward of Rs 5000 on his head and wanted in connection with several cases in Bulandshar, they said.
The situation was finally brought under control after the intervention of local police, Superintendent of Police (Rural) M M Beg told PTI.
One person was arrested and a country-made pistol seized from him, the officer said, adding condition of the injured is stated to be out of danger.
The villagers claimed that they did not recognise the police party in plain clothes who came in a private vehicle. They attacked the police team, taking them for miscreants, he said.
Separate cases have been lodged by both sides and an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
