The study team of a management institute has revealed that the villages adjacent to Jajmau area of the city are highly polluted. The condition in which the people of the villages are living has shocked team.
The team was working on an IIM project ‘Legal Awareness in Environmental Conservation and Role of Youth’. The project was sponsored by the US embassy. Rakesh Jaiswal, the executive secretary of the ‘Eco Friends’ took the team members to some of the villages situated in the Jajmau area.
Talking to Hindustan Times, the team leader and the senior professor in Law at the IIM-Lucknow, Devendra Singh Senger said they had noticed three main things affecting the lives in all the 20 villages situates in Jajmau area.
The first thing that shaken him and the students was apathy of the residents towards their own welfare. Though, most of the residents in the villages were suffering from skin, abdominal or bone-related diseases, but they were not worried about the good health of their children, he said.
Prof Devendra said secondly the people of these villages lacked awareness.
They have become insensitive towards the pollution hazards and were still awaiting government agencies to come to their rescue. Despite the fact that many of them were quite affluent and had tractors and buffaloes and they could afford to settle at other place, but they did not prefer to move out to safer places in the city even for the sake of their own children, he added.
Finally, the villagers have also fed up due to administrative lethargy in improving their living conditions. They told the study team “Several public representatives and officials visited the villages on several occasions and assured them of pollution-free environment, but to no avail. No change could take place in the area even after 20 years.”
Prof Devendra said that the local administration could provide them a ‘gobar gas plant’ for the proper utilisation of the dung at every house. Besides, the waste-water treatment plant could be set up there, he added.
He further said that he would prepare a detailed report on the study-results and would submit it to the State Government, Central Government and the agency of US, which had sponsored the project.
While addressing the team members at the site, Rakesh Jaiswal told them that the biggest problem of the residents was the contaminated water for irrigating the vegetable crops grown in the area. He told them that according to a study conducted by a scientist of IIT-K, Dr P Vankar, the vegetable crops irrigated with the water containing chromium, cadmium, lead, fluoride and other pesticides became unfit for the use of human beings.
Rakesh further told them that recently Jal Nigam had installed a deep-bored tube well, which supplied uncontaminated potable water to about five villages and another such tube well was in the pipeline, which would provide pure water to another nine villages.
The senior professor of law at the IIM- Lucknow Prof Devendra Sengar is engaged in imparting training to the youths to create better environment. Recently, he trained about 100 youths all over country.
