Vodka for Devdas
Saratchandra Chatterjee’s classic hero will now be net savvy and surf porn sites. Hiren Kotwani tells more.
When Sarat Chandra Chatterjee wrote
Devdas
in 1901 little did he imagine that the novel would inspire over half-a-dozen screen adaptations over the decades.
The latest is a contemporary take,
Dev D
, directed by Anurag Kashyap and toplining Abhay Deol. It is learnt that the modern-day Devdas will “surf porn sites and sex chat on the net.”
Kashyap’s Chandramukhi, played by newcomer Kalki, will be a no-apologies barred woman of the night whose conversations are spiced with expletives.
The film features Punjabi actress Mahi Gill as Paro. Vikas Bahl, COO, UTV’s Spotboy, confirms
Dev D
’s net savvy ways pointing out that today there is a cyber café in almost every galli.
Yesterday.. today
Bahl, however, shies away from calling his movie ‘bold’. He says that the idea is to show how Devdas would have reacted to a broken relationship had he been around today.
“Sure, he’d drown his sorrows in the bottle. While he might have drunk
tharra
in the past, now it probably would be vodka,” he states.
He goes on to assert that despite the changes the film will remain true to the spirit of Chatterjee’s story, beginning in a village where Devdas and Parvati grow up before moving to the city.
“A part of the movie will be shot in London,” Bahl says.
So far filming has been done in Delhi and villages around it, Chandigarh and Manali. It will have 14 songs, composed by debutant Amit Trivedi.
