With reference to the report IAS officer who took on sand mafia shunted (July 29), the suspension of Gautam Budh Nagar sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Durga Shakti Nagpal, who clamped down on the illegal sand mafia, will set a wrong precedent for all IAS officers who are doing their duty diligently and honestly.

The Akhilesh government must revoke the SDM’s suspension
With reference to the report IAS officer who took on sand mafia shunted (July 29), the suspension of Gautam Budh Nagar sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Durga Shakti Nagpal, who clamped down on the illegal sand mafia, will set a wrong precedent for all IAS officers who are doing their duty diligently and honestly. However, this is not the first time an IAS officer has had to bear the brunt of the corrupt system. Ashok Khemka, an IAS officer of the 1991 batch, was transferred 44 times in his 22-year career as he exposed corruption in the departments in which he was posted. The Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh must right the wrong by reinstating Nagpal.

A cruel joke on the poor
With reference to the editorial A bad taste in the mouth (Our Take, July 29), it is appalling that the quality of the political discourse in our country is so pathetic. Our leaders, by suggesting that one can have a meal at unrealistic prices, are making a mockery of the poor. There’s no doubt that one can find food at dirt cheap prices at roadside stalls but it cannot meet an individual’s daily nutritional needs. Given the price rise and the fact that many of the poor are engaged in physically demanding activities, it becomes all the more important for them to eat nutritious food.

Correction
This refers to Rohit Kumar Singh and Abhishek Mukherjee’s article No diversions here, please (July 29). According to the National Crime Records Bureau, there were 381 deaths and 1,287 injuries per day due to road accidents in the country in 2012. The words ‘per day’ were missing in the article. The error is regretted.
