Were cops waiting for her death?

MEHAR MURDER turned into a real high-profile case for the Lucknow police after her death. On Sunday, senior cops made several moves in order to show promptness in dealing with the case.

Had the senior cops made these moves soon after the incident the assailants would have been brought to book.

The cops raised question over Mehar’s son Shiraz’s links with gangster KD Singh and also said it was Shiraz who had rented a flat to KD in the building where the incident took place. The cops claimed that the visit of criminals to KD’s flat was a regular feature and the main accused Sachin and Amit too had come to the same place before they shot at Mehar. Before making the statement, the cops forgot that ex-SSP Navniet Sekera had got a raid conducted at KD’s flat. Sekera had information about KD’s activities and he had issued directives to Hazratganj police to initiate action against him.

However, fearing cop’s action KD got bail bond in one of his old cases cancelled soon and surrendered in the court. Thereafter, he stayed behind the bars at the Lucknow district jail but only till SSP Sekera’s transfer. KD was released on bail later and got engaged in criminal activities.    

No check was kept at KD’s flat since then even though Hazratganj police were aware about Sekera’s operation against the gangster. 

KD Singh, a Lucknow University (LU) graduate, had stepped into crime with his mentors—- LU student-turned dons Abhay Singh and Dhananjay Singh. He joined hands with kidnapping kingpin Babloo Srivastava too, later. KD was arrested in Indore after he was returning with a hefty amount extorted in ransom of a businessmann’s kidnapping. Babloo had orchestrated this kidnapping from jail.
After he was released from jail, KD shifted to Dilip Pur Tower building flat. He organised his own gang after separating from Abhay Singh but had patronage of don-turned MLA Dhananjay Singh.

Moreover, in Mehar case, the cops had lost concern even before initiating the primary investigation. The police had recovered a motorcycle from the scene of crime, which was left by the assailants after the shootout. The cops dumped the mobike at the police station and did not even try to know its owner. Had the cops picked up the owner of the motorcycle he could have given vital clue about the assailants.

Now, SSP Ashutosh Pandey says that the culprits would be trapped soon.
