?All that Jaswant has said is now in the public domain, barring the name of the mole,? a source told HT.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is reportedly not inclined to meet BJP leader Jaswant Singh on the controversy over the alleged US mole in Rao’s PMO.

“All that Jaswant has said is now in the public domain, barring the name of the mole,” a source told HT. “What prevents him from disclosing the person’s identity to the media? If he does so, the PM’ll take note of it.”

Another argument against the PM hearing directly from Jaswant is that when the BJP leader held back the information from his own government, why should he now insist on a meeting with the PM to part with the mole’s identity?

In fact, Jaswant’s insistence on seeing Manmohan Singh has led to speculation that his real purpose is to shift to the PM the responsibility of disclosing the name to the country.

For his part, the PM  has reportedly gone through the relevant passages in A Call to Honour. And from the contents it is obvious that Jaswant has to disclose not one but four names: of the mole, of the person who wrote the letter (excerpted in the book), of the US senator to whom it was addressed and of the person who delivered the letter to Jaswant (unless he got it directly from the US diplomat who wrote it or sent it through some other channel, precluding hand-delivery).

Even for the sake of argument, the PM is not obliged to receive the BJP leader in person on the issue. In fact, sources quoted the PM as having said that the BJP veteran should exercise the option of reporting the matter directly to a police station.
