Women say no to smokers
A survey says nearly nine out of 10 girls in Mumbai don’t find smokers attractive while 75 per cent Mumbaikars would not marry a smoker, reports Alifiya Khan.
For Borivli resident Priyanka Vyas, the thought of dating a smoker is not just undesirable, it is repulsive. “I wouldn’t want to marry or date someone who is a flesh and bone replica of a chimney. For me, my life is precious and I don’t want to choke and die,” says the 22-year-old student of patent law.
What is surprising is that Vyas isn’t alone. If the results of a new survey by Mumbai-based NGO Salaam Bombay Foundation are to be believed, nearly nine out of 10 girls in the city don’t find smokers attractive while 75 per cent Mumbaikars would not marry a smoker.
“Nearly 800 boys and girls between the age group of 18-25 years were interviewed during the recent Kala Ghoda Festival. The results show a majority of the youth don’t want to marry or date a smoker and five out of 10 don’t want smokers around them,” says Devika Chaddha, project director, Salaam Bombay Foundation.
The results of the study on the “Attitude of the youth on smoking and tobacco usage among themselves and their partners” revealed that 67 per cent of boys and girls wouldn’t date a smoker.
However the results are no surprise to actress Suchitra Pillai. “I’m not surprised because a lot of my friends give dirty looks or show their irritation when someone lights up near them.”
Nearly 47 per cent youth wanted a smoke-free environment, which is fair according to model and television host Shamita Singha. “I think passive smoking should not be forced on anyone and I wish smoking is banned in public places.”
