Year’s to your health
In fact, the cut-off age for the youth brigade in many of the political parties in India is 40 years.
Just when John McCain was giving final touches to the thank-you speech that he would deliver after he is officially named the Republican candidate for the US presidential race, the age vs competence debate is back. The feisty Vietnam veteran is touching 72, and if he wins, he would be the oldest President to occupy the Oval Office. In fact, a website and a song have been dedicated to things that are younger than him, like the Golden Gate Bridge, CIA, Pentagon, UN, atom bomb, credit cards and coke-in-a-can. In an equally spirited reply, Mr McCain has opened his medical records to the media with the condition that they cannot photocopy the documents or have it reviewed by doctors. Interestingly, his Democratic opponents — Hillary Clinton, 60, and Barack Obama, 46 — are yet to release their medical records. By being first off the block, Mr McCain has proved once again that even with stubborn arthritis in his shoulders and right knee, he is ready to run the race full.
Since we are in the business of commenting and suggesting, here are two of our humble suggestions for Mr McCain: He must read up that recent report which says that an aging brain may be a wiser brain and forgetfulness/distractibility is not a disability but an in-built system of taking in more data and discarding what is irrelevant.
Or, he could think about Indian politicians, most of who were there even before the country was born. Now that never stopped them from keeping one eye on the ‘Office’ and the other on their medicine box. In fact, the cut-off age for the youth brigade in many of the political parties in India is 40 years. Mr McCain, in India, 70 is the new 40. No wonder, we crow so much about our demographic dividend.
