Yuvraj becomes 9th Indian to emulate Test-playing father

Left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh became the ninth Indian cricketer to emulate a Test-playing father when he made his debut in Thursday's match against New Zealand.

Yuvraj's father, Yograj Singh, was a nippy pace bowler who played one Test match — against New Zealand at Wellington during the 1980-81 series.

In 127 years of international cricket, Yuvraj is the 36th man to follow his father's footsteps into Test cricket.

Yuvraj, 21, has played 73 one-dayers for India since joining the team in 2000. He was inducted into the Indian team for the second and final Test against New Zealand this week after captain and batsman Sourav Ganguly had to pull out to recover from surgery for an abscess on his thigh.

Lala Amarnath, who in 1947-48 became the first captain of independent India on a tour to Australia, was followed into Test cricket by two of his sons, Mohinder Amarnath and Surinder Amarnath. Since then, there have been seven Test-playing father-son pairs in Indian cricket.
