The polling percentage was 62.03 and voting passed off peacefully barring a few disputes between the supporters of the two main contenders in the poll — the BJP and the Congress.

Voting was held at 303 polling booths of which 51 were in rural areas. Compared to the city, voting was brisk in the rural areas.

For the first time, the electronic voting machines displayed photographs of the candidates against their names, much to the curiosity of rural voters.

Ninety-year-old mother of Congress candidate Jai Prakash Shastri, also exercised her franchise at a city polling booth with her grandson.

Residents were seen carrying the family elders to cast their votes.

The BJP has fielded Gayatri Raje Puar while the Congress has put up Jai Prakash Shastri. In addition, Hatam Bhai of Samajwadi Party and Independent candidate Sunny Kanwar are also in the fray.

Counting of votes would take place on November 24.

BJP, Congress Workers Come Face To Face

The Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress workers almost came to blows at Sabji Mandi on Shalini Road with the two sides shouting slogans and advancing towards each. Before the situation could take an ugly turn, security force reached the spot and managed to avert a clash.

Youngster Caught For False Voting

Ashish Kajwe, resident of Tilak Nagar, was caught while trying to cast a false vote in the name of Wasim Sheikh, at the booth No 186.

He could not produce any identity documents and polling was stopped briefly due to the confusion. Later, when the polling officials found out his real name, they handed him over to the police.

Security Personnel Cook Their Own Food

Security personnel manning the polling booths who were supposed get packed food, had to cook for themselves as the meals did not reach them on time.

At a polling booth in the Nayapura neighbourhood of the city, security personnel cooked “dal bati” within the polling station premises.

Anger Over Covering Nehru’s Statue

A Congress worker staged a demonstration demanding that the district administration remove the cover on the statue of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Vikram Sabha Bhavan on Jawahar Chowk.

The authorities’ logic was that since the bhavan was a polling station and Nehru belonged to a particular party, his uncovered statue would influence voters.

However, faced with the demonstration and slogan shouting by Congress workers, authorities removed the cover from the statue.
