The nurse, instead of treating the woman, hid the dismembered part of the baby and sent her off to another hospital, the woman said in a complaint to the police.

A male nurse at a government health centre in Ramgarh in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district pulled at a foetus so hard while attempting to deliver the baby that it broke into two parts.

If that incident, which happened on January 6, wasn’t horrific enough, the nurse and a colleague deposited the lower part of the foetus in the hospital’s mortuary and asked the family to take the woman to Jaisalmer.

Dr Ravindra Sankhla, gynecologist at Jawahar Hospital said the staff at the health centre informed him that they finished the delivery but left the placenta in the womb. He said he realised something was horribly wrong while attempting to take out the placenta. According to the doctor, he stabilised the mother’s health and “referred her to Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur”.

Doctors conducted an operation and found the foetus’ head in the womb. The doctors informed the woman’s relatives and the family members.

The mother, identified as Dikhsha Kanwar is now fighting for her life in the Jodhpur hospital. A case has been registered against the two male nurses but police are yet to arrest them.

Dr Nikhil Sharma, who is in charge of the Ramgarh community health centre said at the time of the incident, he wasn’t around. Instead of informing him, the medical staff conducted the delivery, he claimed. Dr Usha Duggad, principal medical officer at Jawahar government hospital said it was a rare case.

Jalam Singh, sub-inspector and investigating officer of the case, said on behalf of Diksha, her husband Tilok Bhati lodged a complaint against Amritlal and Junjhar Singh, the two male nurses. Tilok alleged that the nurses at the Ramgarh centre were drunk.

“When questioned, the hospital staffers handed over the lower part of the foetus to us,” he said. No arrest has been made so far, he added.
