A small chartered plane of Ryan Air with seven passengers on board skidded off the runway and crashed into the Udaipur airport wall on Wednesday evening.
Udaipur ATCs and eyewitnesses said the plane’s tyres burst when it landed, causing it to skid some distance and hit the wall. The plane was flying from Jodhpur. Co-pilot Captain Rajput, who received minor injuries, was taken to the government medical college hospital and discharged after first aid. Doctors also examined the passengers and declared them fit.
Udaipur District Collector Alok was waiting at the airport for a flight to Delhi. His presence helped speed up the official machinery. Sources said that airport staff and security personnel responded quickly to help the passengers.
Alok told Hindustan Times on phone from Udaipur airport that he saw the aircraft landing but suddenly go off the runway and hit the wall. The damage to the plane was considerable but no estimate of the damage was available.
Air traffic control officer ML Meena said, “Captain Manish Thakur was piloting the aircraft which lost control and went off the runway. The aircraft has been damaged and some technical snag might have created a problem in its landing. Things will be clear after the engineers check the damaged aircraft.”
Medical Superintendent of Udaipur Medical College Dr SK Kaushik said, “Co-pilot Captain Rajput had complained of a pain in the back and was X-rayed. He was discharged after first aid.”
