Iqbal was arrested by Bihar’s railway police and a team from the state CID reached Dehrion-Sone late at night to take him into custody. He will be produced in court there and then brought to Kolkata.

“We received a photograph of Iqbal sent by the Bengal CID and were tipped off by them that Munna would be reaching Dehrion-Sone station on Thursday. Accordingly, we informed the railway police and they caught him,” Manu Maharaj, police super of Dehri-on-Sone, told HT.

The hunt for Iqbal began on February 12, after a police officer was killed in mob violence in the Garden Reach area of the city following street fights that erupted over the filing of nomination papers of a local college.

The incident assumed a distinct political colour since Iqbal is a local Trinamool heavyweight and borough chairman of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Such was his clout that even a senior minister in the Mamata Banerjee cabinet, Firhad Hakim, stood by Iqbal even as the police was looking for him.

And just when city police boss RK Pachnanda and his men were about to nab him, he was shunted out.

Coming in for severe criticism over the Garden Reach incident, the chief minister handed over the case to the CID.

The CID got down to the job in earnest and the first to be nabbed was Sheikh Mukhtar, a Congress leader from the Garden Reach area.
