Multiple factors cause teeth to become dull and lose their bright, white sparkle. Certain foods like beetroot, berries, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, curry and tomato-based sauces can stain your enamel, which is the outermost layer of your teeth. Even drinks like tea, coffee, red wine and fruit juices can cause tooth discolouration. Additionally, plaque buildup on your teeth can cause them to look yellow. Experts describe homemade ways to whiten your teeth without the chemicals found in tooth-whitening products.

The first and the foremost thing is to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day. “Use a mouthwash after every meal. Adopt practices such as tongue cleaning and gum massages for better oral health and in turn a sparkling smile,” says Dr Gunita Singh, Director, Dentem and Associate Consultant, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

A diet consisting of raw fruits and vegetables will remove the layer of plaque and

keep teeth clean and white. Using baking soda helps to remove stains from teeth while preventing bacteria from forming in your mouth. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with water to form a paste and brush with it a few times a week for whiter teeth. “Baking soda and apple cider vinegar lighten mild external stains on teeth. These being abrasive and acidic, wear away enamel if used excessively or improperly,” cautions Dr Vishal Gupta, Dentaris.

Oil pulling is another technique that involves rinsing your mouth with coconut oil for 15 minutes daily, with the aim of removing bacteria and decreasing the amount of plaque build-up. “Oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic technique to reduce bad bacteria in the mouth and give a fresh breath. Mix of essential oils like coconut, clove, sesame, eucalyptus, basil and lemon oil can be kept in mouth for 10 min or used as a rinse,” says Gupta

Strawberries are the best friend to your teeth as they contain malic acid naturally which is a whitening agent. “Rub them on your teeth everyday and watch the magic,” shares Dr Singh.

Banana and orange peel helps build enamel and contribute to a beautiful smile. Rub your teeth with the inside of these fruit peels and you can observe the difference in a week or two.

“Cut down on food/drinks that can stain your teeth such as coffee, red wine, dark berries, smoking and chewing tobacco,” suggests Dr. Neetika Modi, Director, Studio Aesthetique. It is recommended to visit a dentist at least twice a year to maintain one’s oral hygiene.
