Lok Sabha election 2019: Congress’ Gaurav Gogoi to defend Kaliabor seat

Kaliabor is a Congress stronghold and Gaurav Gogoi had won the seat easily in 2014.

Kaliabor Lok Sabah constituency in central Assam which is spread across Golaghat, Jorhat, Morigaon and Nagaon districts is a general category seat.

The constituency covers ten assembly segments - Golaghat, Dergaon (SC), Bokakhat, Dhing, Batadroba, Rupohihat, Samaguri, Kaliabor, Sarupathar and Khumtai. Voting is on April 11.

In 2014, Gourav Gogoi of the Congress won the seat defeating Mrinal Kumar Saikia of the BJP by 93,874 votes by securing 38% of the votes. The Congress has decided to re-nominate Gogoi once again from Kaliabor.

Kaliabor has been a Congress stronghold. Gaurav Gogoi is the son of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi. In the 2009 Lok Sabha election, Tarun Gogoi’s brother Dip Gogoi had won for the Congress defeating Asom Gana Parishad’s Gunin Hazarika.

As per the 2011 census, out of a total population of 2494396 in the constituency, 93.71% is rural and 6.29% is urban population. The Scheduled castes (SC) and Scheduled tribes (ST) ratio is 6.22 and 6.74, respectively out of total population.

Tea industry and tourism are the main revenue earners in the constituency.
