The Kapu community with over two lakh electors who have long demanded OBC status is expected to play a major role in the election.

Machilipatnam is one of 15 Lok Sabha constituencies out of 25 in Andhra Pradesh which the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) won in 2014 when its candidate Konakalla Narayana Rao defeated YSRCP’s Kolusu Partha Sarathy by over 80,000 votes. The TDP has re-nominated Rao for the seat, while YSRCP selected former MP Vallabhaneni Balashowry as its candidate.
