Lok Sabha election 2019: Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh set for tough fight

In 2014, the TDP recorded a thumping victory in Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency which had been a Congress stronghold for decades.

Spread across East Godavari and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency used to be a Congress stronghold for decades from where it had won six times in a row before the TDP won for the first time in 1984.

In the 2014 elections, TDP’s Murali Mohan recorded a thumping victory over Boddu Venkataramana Chowdary of the YSRCP while Durgesh Kandula of the Congress finished a distant third.

The Congress had won six consecutive Lok Sabha elections in Rajahmundry between 1957 and 1980. TDP managed to secure a win in the 1984 Lok Sabha election while the BJP won in 1998 and 1999.

The TDP has nominated Murali Mohan’s daughter-in-law Maganti Roopa as its candidate this time in Rajahmundry while the YSRCP has named Mangana Bharat.

As per the estimates of 2011 census, out of total population of 1903184, 70.27% is rural and 29.73% is urban population. The Scheduled castes (SC) and Scheduled tribes (ST) ratio is 20.49 and 0.95, respectively out of the total population
