Lok Sabha election 2019: Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh set for tough fight
In 2014, the TDP recorded a thumping victory in Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency which had been a Congress stronghold for decades.
Spread across East Godavari and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency used to be a Congress stronghold for decades from where it had won six times in a row before the TDP won for the first time in 1984.
Its industrial muscle and equally formidable agricultural and aquaculture makes Rajahmundry a vital constituency.
In the 2014 elections, TDP’s Murali Mohan recorded a thumping victory over Boddu Venkataramana Chowdary of the YSRCP while Durgesh Kandula of the Congress finished a distant third.
The Congress had won six consecutive Lok Sabha elections in Rajahmundry between 1957 and 1980. TDP managed to secure a win in the 1984 Lok Sabha election while the BJP won in 1998 and 1999.
The TDP has nominated Murali Mohan’s daughter-in-law Maganti Roopa as its candidate this time in Rajahmundry while the YSRCP has named Mangana Bharat.
