“The Rampur unit of the party has decided not to contest the election and it has been also conveyed in writing to the party’s national president (Akhilesh Yadav),” Khan said in a hurriedly called press conference in Rampur.

Blaming the BJP for the decision, Khan said: “Despite that fact that barely a month is left for elections, the SIT is camping in Rampur and threatening people.

Throwing out children from the RBS school, demolishing the Urdu gate and other such events in the district clearly suggest that constitutional institutions are being misused by the government for its political interests. I would rather like to appeal to the collector to demolish my house than attacking educational institutions,” he added.

Officials of the Rampur district administration on March 6 demolished the Urdu gate of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. While Khan alleged that the gate was demolished because it had Urdu written on it, Rampur district magistrate AK Singh said the action was taken as the structure was illegal and obstructed the movement of vehicles.

The gate was constructed in 2015 during the Samajwadi Party regime by the construction and design services (C&DS) of the Jal Nigam at a cost of 40 lakh without obtaining the mandatory “no objection certificate”.

C&DS comes under the urban development ministry which was headed by Azam Khan during the time of construction. The government was targeting educational institutions that had a majority of Muslim students and there was an undeclared curfew in Rampur, Khan alleged.
