Saboli is located in Gokulpuri assembly constituency and is dominated by Dalits, Brahmins and Muslims. Tiwari is contesting against Congress’ Sheila Dikshit and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) Dilip Pandey.

As soon as the Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) candidate from North East Delhi constituency Manoj Tiwari reached to address a public meeting in Saboli on Sunday evening, a group of teenager started shouting “rinkiya ke papa agaye”, referring to one of his popular songs.

The Bhojpuri singer and actor turned politician is seeking re-election from the seat. He spoke about his work in the constituency, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, called Pakistan “an enemy” and even reminded voters of the evening at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus when anti-India slogans were allegedly raised.

“I have brought metro services to your doorsteps as I had promised in 2014. There are only two politicians who have ever travelled in Metro till the Gokulpuri metro station — Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002 and then Manoj Tiwari in 2018. I also made sure that the Signature Bridge project was completed during my tenure,” he said.

Saboli is located in Gokulpuri assembly constituency and is dominated by Dalits, Brahmins and Muslims. Tiwari is contesting against Congress’ Sheila Dikshit and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) Dilip Pandey.

To connect with the local Purvanchali population, which has a strong presence in the constituency, Tiwari elected to pepper his speech with Bhojpuri words such as “electionwa (elections)” and “kya haal ba (how are you)”, and sang patriotic songs during his address.

Alleging that Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal did nothing for the constituency, he said, “This Delhi government is not even letting the police take action against those who raised anti-national slogans in JNU. These are not assembly elections or MCD elections. You have to elect a Prime Minister who can protect you from our dushmans (Pakistan).”

At one point, a group of locals started questioning Tiwari about some of his 2014 pre-poll promises. “Everything will get sorted if Modiji comes back in power. Chalo bhaiya sab Modiji ke liye tali to bajao,” he replied

Meanwhile, sitting next to the stage from where Tiwari was addressing, 47-year-old Sumati Raj said, “Tiwari is a good singer. We have come here to listen to his songs. We do not know about his politics. Votes will go to Modi’s name.”
