Lok Sabha elections 2019: Outer Manipur constituency will witness a multi-cornered fight

Thangso Baite of the Congress party is the sitting member of the parliamentary constituency and has held the seat since 2004. He had defeated the Naga People’s Front leader Soso Lorho in the last Lok Sabha election held in 2014.

Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat is one of the two parliamentary constituencies in Manipur and is reserved for the members of the Scheduled Tribes.

Thangso Baite of the Congress party is the sitting member of the parliamentary constituency and has held the seat since 2004. He had defeated the Naga People’s Front leader Soso Lorho in the last Lok Sabha election held in 2014.

The Congress has fielded a new face K James, a government employee-turned-entrepreneur, after Baite did not apply for a party ticket this time. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s state unit vice-president H Shokhopao alias Benjamin Mate will be its candidate for the Outer Manipur parliamentary seat.

National People’s Party’s candidate is Thangminlien Kipgen, a former minister from Kangpokpi district, for the Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency. Similarly, Naga People’s Front, a coalition partner of the BJP in Manipur, has named Dr Lorho Mao as their candidate for the seat. Manipur People’s Party, one of the oldest regional political party in northeastern India, named Laikham Kaipu from Chandel district as candidates for Outer Manipur seat.

Outer Manipur will vote on April 18 and counting will be held on May 23.
