Delhi stays with BJP, say exit polls

The BJP is projected to win six to seven seats in Delhi five years after it swept all seven seats in the national capital five years ago, according to the India Today-Axis My India exit poll..

The Congress could get one seat while the AAP is projected to draw a blank.

The India TV exit poll gives the BJP all the seven seats in the national capital. News 24 Chanakya too gave the BJP all 7 seats in the capital.

Times Now-VMR also predicted all comprehensive victory for the BJP.

Exit polls often get it wrong and the actual results will only be known on Thursday, May 23 when votes are counted.

The BJP would have run into a tougher challenged had the Congress and the AAP managed to tie up. Despite talks of an alliance, nothing concrete came off it and the two parties went solo.

Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal later said he wished an alliance with the Congress in the capital had materialized, but added that on hindsight it was better for the AAP to fight the polls on its own.

The campaign marked a bitter war of words between the BJP and the AAP with the later accusing the former’s east Delhi candidate Gautam Gambhir of running a smear campaign against his rival Atishi Marlena.

The voter turnout in Delhi was at 59.03%. Delhi’s had voted in the sixth phase on May 12. Delhi’s voter turnout was about five per cent lower than what it had registered in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. There were more women voters than men in three Delhi parliamentary constituencies.

While South Delhi didn’t have any female candidates from the three prominent parties – the AAP, the BJP and the Congress – in east Delhi AAP had fielded Atishi Marlena. The sitting MP of the BJP Meenakshi Lekhi was contesting from New Delhi.
