2 killed in UP communal clashes, curfew imposed

The district police officials said curfew has been imposed in Kotwali and Cantonment police station area and vigil was being maintained in other areas of the city.

In a separate incident violence broke out in Bhataura Mau village in Barabanki district on Wednesday evening when the members of the two communities clashed during the Durga immersion.

IG (Law and Order), BP Singh said two persons died in the communal clash in Faizabad on Thursday.

Durga Prasad a native of Faizabad was stabbed with scissor by the anti social elements. In a separate incident Mohammed Umar resident of Inayatpur village died in-group clash.

The violence broke out between the two communities during Durga idol immersion in the chowk area of the city on Wednesday evening. Nearly two dozens shops and several vehicles were put on fire.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, in a meeting on Wednesday night reviewed the situation and directed the principal secretary (home), RM Srivastava and Director General of Police (DGP), AC Sharma to visit Faizabad to assess the situation. Both the officers will submit their report to chief minister.

Talking to journalists after the Cabinet meeting today the chief minister said strict penal action would be taken against the troublemakers in Faizabad.

He said those trying to disrupt communal harmony in the state would be dealt with sternly.

He said the police had already taken action and now the situation was under control in Faizabad.

The chief minister also announced compensation to the people whose shops were gutted in fire during the violence. "They will be fully compensated", the chief minister said, adding that police officers had been directed to effectively deal with the situation.

Talking to HT, principal secretary, Home, RM Srivastava said, “Adequate police force has been deployed in strife torn area. The situation was peaceful and under control. Curfew has been imposed in Kotwali police station area of the city. The DGP, AC Sharma and ADG (Intelligence), OP Singh are on the spot to supervise the situation and deployment of the force”.

Sharma and Singh held meeting with the police and district administration officers in the morning. Later they met the religious heads of both the communities in circuit house and discussed the measure for the restoration of peace and confidence among the people.

The violence broke out between the two communities during Durga idol immersion in the chowk area of the city. According to information the members of the Kendriya Pooja Samiti members were protesting over the police failure in recovery of the original idols which were stolen from the chowk temple nearly two months ago. The members said that recovered idols were not original.

As a mark of protest the people held demonstration at the chowk, which delayed the completion of idol immersion. The members of the other community also raised slogans the trouble broke out.

The rumor was agog about attack on a religious place and the agitated mob indulged in arsoning and vandalism. Several persons were injured and property worth lakhs was gutted in arson incidents.

IG (Law and Order) BP Singh said said during the procession some anti social elements threw ‘gulal’ on a mosque in Bhadarsa area. In the chowk area the violence broke out after eve teasing of a girl by the anti social elements.

About the Barabanki incident Singh said idol of Durga was installed in Surjanpur village without permission from the district administration.

Violence broke out when the procession was passing through Bhataura Mau village. Some villagers objected to the procession while the organizers remained adamant.

The district administration officers rushed to the spot and requested the organizers to take the procession from a different route.
