In the one-page emotional resignation letter written to BJP president Rajnath Singh, Singh who was projected as BJP CM candidate, regretted that the party won much less than expected number of seats despite the best possible efforts of his own and that of the party workers in the elections which were fought under his leadership.

He urged the workers not to be disappointed by the poor show at the hustings and get ready for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

The tally of the saffron party came down to 51 from 88 in the 2002 polls.

Singh suggested to Rajnath Singh that he must “spare” at least three days to hold discussions with BJP office-bearers and leaders to analyse the results to know the weaknesses of the organization and to identify the mistakes.

A meeting of the BJP’s core committee consisting of about 20 senior state leaders, organizing secretaries and others has been convened here on Wednesday for a postmortem of the results.

Though the formal introspection within the BJP over humiliating poor show at the hustings is yet to start, the blame game has already started in the party as nobody is ready to take the responsibility for the defeat.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani told the BJP parliamentary party that the party lost the UP elections because it was not able to convince voters it can form the government on its own.

He told BJP MPs that there was also need to strengthen the organisation. BJP’s deputy leader in Lok Sabha V K Malhotra quoted Advani as saying that “we were not able to inspire confidence (among voters) that we can form the government on our own."
