With reports of indiscipline pouring in from various parts of the state, the Samajwadi Party has decided to formulate code of conduct for the leaders and workers.

The national president Mulayam Singh has issued stern warning that anti-social activities would not be tolerated and action would be taken.

Now moves are afoot frame guidelines of “dos and don’t” for the partymen.

The state SP president Akhilesh Yadav has repeatedly said that lawlessness would not be tolerated and whosoever responsible for such activities would face consequences including expulsion from the party.

The disciplinary committee was the idea of Akhilesh Yadav much before the elections. Naved Siddique, a spokesperson of the party said: “The committee idea existed before and now it would be implemented. The committee would receive complains and monitor behaviour.”

“We will not allow every Tom, Dick and Harry to use party flag on four wheeler”, said a senior party leader on the condition of anonymity. According to plan only prominent party office-bearers up to district level would be allowed to display flag on vehicle.

During the last five years the use of “blue flag embossed with elephant” on vehicles had assumed menacing dimension in the state.

The SP has also noticed sudden sprouting of hoardings of large number of leaders along with Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow and other places. “This is just to attract the attention of gullible officers”, said the leader. One such huge hoarding was removed from 5, KD Square (CM’s official residence) today.

The party sources said that a high level committee on code of conduct was also likely to be constituted to monitor the activities of leaders and workers. The party leadership appeared to be perturbed over several violent incidents, including Jhansi and Firozabad during the last few days.

The pitch is not only high among party men to hog limelight but some Ulema (clerics) who were largely benefited during the Mayawati regime have now been hankering for spotlight in SP dispensation also. Most of clerics had deserted the SP after its fall in 2007.

While Shia cleric and vice chairman All India Muslim Personal Board (AIMPLB) Dr Kalbe Sadiq was first to meet Mulayam Singh Yadav after the election results, others have been trying to “re-connect” with the party. Dr Sadiq said it was courtesy call. Dr Sadiq had a tug of war with senior SP leader Mohd Azam Khan on the issue of RSS leader KC Sudarshan meeting with him (Dr Sadiq). Some clerics, who misjudged the political situation and had jumped Congress bandwagon, are now in “mourning”.
