Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren is really all about Vijay Sethupathi, his ability to slip into any character and some insanely funny moments in the film.

Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren is proof to Vijay Sethupathi’s ability to slip into any character he plays with effortless ease, and in case of Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren, it’s even more evident as he salvages a film that struggles to rise beyond some insanely fun moments. Debutant director Arumuga Kumar needs to be lauded for experimenting with a wacky subject in his maiden attempt, which, unfortunately, doesn’t hit the bull’s eye.

The story revolves around three characters played by Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Karthik and Niharika. We’re introduced to Vijay Sethupathi as the leader of a tribe that worships Yama, lord of death. They rob for a livelihood and exchange the loot for daily amenities. Niharika and Gautham Karthik play college students and we don’t quite understand till the end if they’re in love. But Gautham comes to Niharika’s rescue when she’s taken captive by Vijay Sethupathi’s tribe, who mostly speak Telugu.

In essence, Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren is a comedy of errors that works due to its dark humour. There are some genuinely funny stretches. For instance, one sequence where Gautham and Daniel get roughed up in a police station is outright hilarious. Another sequence where Vijay Sethupathi speaks non-stop for close to four minutes is thoroughly entertaining. But the problem with the film is its inconsistency in tone, which sticks out like a sore thumb.

Gautham Karthik shines in a role that’s unlike anything he’s done so far in his career. Much is not expected of Niharika, but she still manages to play her part aptly and makes a decent debut.

Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren works to an extent thanks to Vijay Sethupathi and some laugh-out-loud portion. It could’ve been funnier, given its potential.
