Bharmal had received Rs 6 lakh from Shah but the latter had been stalling payment of the remaining Rs 4 lakh. Investigating officers said that on Tuesday, Bharmal came to Mumbai and contacted his friends Lakshman Kunchipurve, 37, and Babu Kunchipurve, 36, from Dharavi and asked them to accompany him. They rented a car and hired taxi driver Mohammed Akram, 49, to drive them around. At 2pm, Bharmal and his three accomplices visited the angadia’s shop at Tata Road near Charni Road.

They told the shop employees Anil Rathod, 45 and Dharmesh Sagar, 40, they wanted to see the owner but when they could not get a satisfactory answer, Bharmal and his men asked Rathod and Sagar to accompany them to Malad to talk to Shah about paying the remaining amount.

“When Rathod and Sagar refused to go along, Bharmal and his accomplices forcefully shoved the employees in the car and left for Malad,” said Suryakant Bangar, senior police inspector of DB Marg police station.

Bangar said that as soon as the car reached Jaslok Hospital in Peddar Road, it slowed down due to heavy traffic. “At first, Rathod did not object, however, when Bharmal threatened him, the former got scared and began shouting for help,” he said.

Rathod noticed the traffic police constable posted at the junction, threw the door of the car open, and called out for help. The traffic constable intercepted the car and asked the driver to park it. He then alerted the control room and informed them of the kidnapping. Constables from Gamdevi police station then arrested the four men and handed them over to the DB Marg police.

“We have arrested the four men on charges of kidnapping. They were presented before the court on Wednesday where they were remanded to police custody,” said Bangar.
