In Mumbai: RTI activist held for sending abusive texts to NCP MLC
A Shiv Sena member, who is also an MLC, said she too received similar threatening text messages
An RTI activist from Jalgaon was arrested and brought to Mumbai on Tuesday for allegedly sending abusive text messages to a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) member, who is also a member of the legislative council (MLC).
The Vile Parle police said the MLC had registered a complaint against the unidentified accused earlier this month, citing the abusive and threatening messages he had sent her.
The police registered an FIR under section 507 and 509 of Indian Penal Code and under section 67 (A) of the IT Act. Based on technical evidence, the accused ,Deepak Kumar Gupta, 40, was arrested. Gupta works at a shop in Jalgaon.
He will be produced before a magistrate court on Wednesday.
A Shiv Sena member, who is also an MLC, said she too received similar threatening text messages. The police are trying to determine if there is a common link between the two cases and whether Gupta is the one who sent the threats in the second case. However, they have not yet registered a case.
The police are still trying to ascertain the motive behind the abusive messages sent to both women.
