The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed widening and deepening of Chamdawadi storm water drain. Every year during monsoon, residents of Railway Colony and Jay Bharat housing society, which has 65 buildings, in Khar (West) are surrounded by at least four-foot water. The residents have been demanding a solution since 2005.

Water from the western suburbs flows into Chamdawadi nullah, which passes through Kalanagar junction and releases water into the Mithi river. The work on the storm water drain had been stuck for many years as the drain passes through railway track. The civic body and the railway authorities kept shifting responsibility of maintaining the drainage system. The 53-crore Chamadwadi nullah project began this year. The BMC has begun widening culverts and desilting the drain.

A civic official said, “It will take two years to complete the project but the immediate measures will bring relief to Khar residents.” The storm water drains department has widened the pipelines which open on the WR premises as an immediate measure. As per the BMC, it has widened 90-m long storm water drains from 6m to 10m. The rest of the 350-m long drain has been widened from 10m to 14m. The BMC said this will benefit residents of Kherwadi, Navpada and Ram Mandir road in Bandra (East).
