Locate toilets, ticket counters at Mumbai railway stations using app

For 35 lakh suburban commuters, this could mean a hassle-free navigation at the major suburban stations such as Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Borivli and Virar...

You can now locate passenger amenities such as toilets, escalators and automated ticket vending machines (ATVM), among others, at stations on the Western Railway (WR) using your smartphone. The WR on Sunday launched DISHA mobile application for these facilities. At present, Android handset users can download this app.

For 35 lakh suburban commuters, this could mean a hassle-free navigation at the major suburban stations such as Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Borivli and Virar.

“This is a resourceful mobile app, which will give passengers exact information and location of the platforms and also direct them to restaurants, ATMs, exit points or escalators. All this, at the click of a button on your smartphone,” said Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager (DRM), Western Railway (Mumbai division).

More in the offing

To make suburban travel safer, Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu sanctioned Rs8.10 crore to raise the height of platforms on Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (CR). Around 145 platforms will be raised using these fund, of which 48 are on CR and 97 are on WR.

Apart from this, Rs45 lakh have been sanctioned for integrated security system (ISS); Rs9 lakh for six stations on CR and Rs36 lakh for 32 stations on WR. Also, security equipment such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, door and hand-held metal detector and luggage scanner will be purchased using funds alloted.

App and its benefits?

After downloading the app (DISHA) , commuters will be able to access general information about a station such as: number of platforms, location of ATMs, etc

App will also provide exact location of railway offices, emergency medical room, government railway police (GRP) chowky, refreshment stalls and stationmaster’s office among others

Commuters can also access information about ATVMs, auto, taxi and bus stands, ticket windows entry/exits points, location of escalators, foot-over-bridges, lifts, wheel chairs and reservation chart

It ill also provide exact locations of book stalls, refreshments counters, toilets, water coolers, etc
